The Clarity Editor

Academic writing group in Asia

Academics and scholars in Asia: you are invited to a weekly online writing accountability group, Writing in Good Company, hosted by academic editor Kyra Freestar (Bridge Creek Editing) and me, Ema Naito.

Sign up here for Writing in Good Company (Asia) (or opt to be notified of future sessions). One-hour sessions on Zoom, once a week for 8 weeks. Next set: 12/13 May to June 2025. See it in your time zone.

What is it?

Writing in Good Company offers academic writers a regular, quiet structured space to work on their writing projects. It’s for professors, lecturers, postdocs, graduate students, and others writing academic- and research-adjacent work.

The group is loosely organized around the concept of academic writing accountability groups (see for example in Washington University in St. Louis and in Trend in Microbiology). However, instead of rigid “accountability,” the goal is for each participant to learn what kinds of practices support them individually as a writer, scholar, and career scientist. This learning will take place through practice, reflection, and sharing.

When are the sessions?

Each session will be 1 hour long and run once a week, for 8-weeks. Days and times are:

  • Asia—Tuesdays
    • 7:30 a.m. New Delhi
    • 9 a.m. Bangkok
    • 10 a.m. Taipei
    • 11 a.m. Seoul
  • US—Mondays
    • 4 p.m. Honolulu
    • 7 p.m. Seattle

Next set will run from 12/13 May until June 2025. See it in your time zone.

What does it cost to join?

Everyone is welcome. At this time, there is no cost to attend.

Who started the group?

Writing in Good Company was started for academics in the US by Kyra Freestar of Bridge Creek Editing. With that group thriving, Kyra invited me to join her in offering the sessions to colleagues in Asia at times more suited to our region.

Tell me more about sessions!

These are our goals for you:

  • To increase your writing productivity
  • To increase your writing awareness, confidence, and satisfaction
  • To meet and build connections with other academic writers
  • To build the skills and confidence to lead your own academic writing groups in the future

This is how the group works:

  • You will receive a reminder email with Zoom link each Monday and Friday.
  • We meet for one hour per week on Tuesday mornings (Asia).
  • We check in briefly at the beginning of the hour, write for 30–40 minutes, then check in again at the end.

We will begin with the following group agreements:

  • We will attend as many of the 8 weekly meetings as we can.
  • We will focus on our own and each other’s strengths and believe in each other’s success.
  • We will take care of ourselves, and participate (or not) each week in the ways that work for us.
  • We will be curious about each other’s experience.
  • We will keep confidentiality: Learning goes, stories stay.
  • We will be able to discuss, change, or add to these agreements as needed.
