Editors are human too. Even professional editors, when they’re writing, could benefit from having an editor!

Well, that was embarrassing.

I submitted a work application for an editing job, saying how I had “an eye for detail,” and then noticed after submitting (and no ability to go back and edit) an extra word in the text that I should’ve deleted.

Now, I had worked on the application rather late at night, after the kids were in bed.

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with working late at night, especially for us night owls, but my rule of thumb is to let any kind of work “rest” overnight while I sleep, so I can look at it with fresh eyes in the morning before submitting or sending anything.

Which I didn’t do last night.

Because I was too tired to follow my own best advice.

So, a note to myself as well as to anyone else:

Sleep on it!

A friend also commented that it just goes to show that even an editor needs an editor when they are being a writer—guess one can never underestimate the benefit of a fresh pair of eyes!

p.s. I did “sleep on it” in this case, and woke up still feeling disturbed by the situation. So I ended up withdrawing my initial application, then resubmitting with a note on the cover letter with my reason for doing so. Don’t know if that helped or not, but it seemed to be OK as I got the offer. Phew!
